The PACKARD® at
Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance
August 13 to 17, 2003

Our location could not have been
better. It was at a bend in the street, so traffic from both
directions faced us. We were across the street and about 300
feet from the Maybach display.
A conservative estimate of the
number of people who stopped at the Packard® is 475, and there
was a large number who stopped their car at the Packard® site,
asked questions and took photos from the car.
Others just stopped their cars to
take photos and videos: others gave us the ‘thumbs-up’ or
‘Beautiful’ or ‘Okay!’ as they walked or drove by on our side of
the street or on the other side. It was a treat to see people,
especially late in the afternoon, tired and looking bored
driving by, notice the Packard®, perk up, turn their head around
like an owl to see more of it – and smile!
At times, there were 2 cars
double double parked on the street, talking to us about the
Packard®.
People walking across the
concours could see the Packard® from ¼ mile away, and a number of
people said that, ‘We just had so come over to see the Packard®!’
‘My husband saw the Packard® from way over there, and he had to
see it!’ ‘We were way over there, saw the Packard® and here we
are!’

Most common comment when seeing
the engine – ‘WOW!’ There were some suggestions which will be
seriously considered.
A few who had seen pictures of
the new Packard® commented, ‘Photos just don’t do it justice –
it’s truly gorgeous!’ Most viewers who are familiar with Packards® mentioned the obvious styling connection to the 1941
through ’47 Clippers.
The comment that Packard® ‘was one
of the most interesting cars here’ was truly an accolade.
In addition to all the usual
vehicle makes, there were various past years and new samples of
Rolls Royce, Maybach, Ferrari, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche,
Maserati, Aston Martin, Alfa Romeo, Mercedes, Jaguar, Viper, MG,
Bentley.
The very positive comments were
similar to those at previous showings. I have been to many, many
automobile shows, and have never heard the number or exuberance
of positive comments directed at any other new vehicle.
We learned,
again, that people are really happy to see a modern Packard®, and
feel that North Americans should have a domestic ultra-luxury
vehicle – and that it should be a Packard®.
